A Film by Georgia Usborne & Julia Discenza
(Coming in 2022)

A film by Julia Discenza and Georgia Usborne

Little Gem is a movement, poetry, and art film. It is a window into the relationship of Max and Ayva, two New Orleans artists entangled in a complicated romance. Reflecting on their time together, they each must make a choice to face the reality of their tenuous situation or escape to the comfort of their own fantasies.

Developed in part through a residency from Arts On Site Residency and Retreat Center in Kerhonksen, New York.

Little Gem Magnolia (2021)

AWARDS:
Best Experimental Film, Oregon Short Film Festival
Official Selection, International Poetry Film Festival, Hollywood

An experimental poetry film that tells the story of a relationship between an artist and his muse, Ayva who is a new immigrant to New Orleans. With her visa soon to expire, Ayva (Little Gem Magnolia) has to make a choice to either return to her country that is turning authoritarian, remain in New Orleans illegally or seek an arrangement with the artist, a married man, who she inspires.

The rising waters and receding Bayou are the backdrop for the setting for the story and used as metaphor for Ayva’s conflict. Once the inspiration for great art, The Mississippi River and its relationship to the city of New Orleans now face great challenges, as does Ayva. Little Gem Magnolia also draws parallels between the black slave experience in New Orleans in the 1820’s, and the opportunity given to Madame Rose Nicaud - also the namesake of the cafe featured in the opening scene.

Little Gem Magnolia explores risk and consequence in an ever changing world.

Villa Dei Misteri is an experimental dance poetry film adapted from Paul Rabinowitz’ short story by Georgia Usborne. Villa dei Misteri depicts a memory revisited through words and movement, exploring a woman's relationship to self, space and time and the lenses of perception through which we see ourselves and others. The video is currently working its way around the festival circuit and not available to share. If you are interested in screening at your event or film festival email us at info@paulrabinowitz.com

Retrospective With Reading Glasses (2021)

The experimental film used for Retrospective with Reading Glasses, a mixed media exhibition that uses a combination of photographs, videos and short poems by Paul Rabinowitz to tell the story of an evolving artist. The exhibition has multiple rooms, each one its own chapter of the artist's progression: starting off with more classical black and white photos, and moving through to color photos. The pictures become grittier and more saturated as the artist finds his own voice. The poetry that accompanies the photos tells a similar story, the speaker often addressing a familiar “you” (which can be interpreted by the reader as themselves, the artist, the model in the photograph, or even a loved one). The size of the text is in small font so the visitor must use ‘reading glasses’ to read the poetry. Reading glasses are an instrument that make clear what’s already on the page; this carefully curated exhibit will do the same, as it will show the story of growth, evolution, and bravery already apparent in Paul’s raw materials.
